Round Pole Bridge Road closure sign in Milton

Round Pole Bridge Road closure sign in Milton.

MILTON, Del. - Parents, students and neighbors share their frustrations about the closure of Round Pole Bridge Road.Ā

Road work scheduled from March 24 through April 30 inspired 14 people living along Round Pole Bridge Road to send an open letter to DelDOT and Sussex County officials.

Including mom of four, Anna Hill. As a full time mom and full time worker, she says she's been more than inconvenienced by these recent changes because her kids can no longer walk home and let themselves in from school due to the road closure moving their bus stop.

"I had to work around a zoom call that I wasn't able to do remotely off of my cell phone. That kind of affected my job, I don't know how my boss perceived that, but I had to switch up my schedule. Now here I am running on empty with gas," Hill shared.

Running empty on gas as she rushes to pick up one of her other children. Hill's children are in three different schools and she says trying to pick all of them up has been a hassle.

Hill was waiting at the new bus stop at the corner of Round Pole Bridge Road and Cave Neck Road, which is a five to six minute car ride from her home or a one hour walk home for her daughter, Kate.Ā

Kate, like many children who live on the three mile stretch of road, isn't happy with her new routine for the next five weeks.

"It's just kind of annoying because I have to wake up 30 minutes earlier, which is already early. School starts at 7:48 a.m., wake up at like 5:15 a.m. We have to leave the house at 6:00 a.m. to get down here for the bus," Hill explained.

CoastTV spoke with DelDOT on Monday, March 31, and they say "we will not be making any changes as it is a complete reconstruction of the road so there is no road to reopen until the project is completed."Ā

As for the bus stop specifically, we reached out to the Cape Henlopen School District and have not heard back yet.
