MILTON, Del. - Milton's Parking Working group is exploring ways to get more people in and out of town more frequently to free up downtown spots.

One option is to do meter parking with actual meters or the ParkMobile App. The group said in the proposal to the town council that the revenue from the proposed parking rate would be just enough to keep the enforcement operating. The proposal also stated that the fee would be $2 per hour from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Locals like Andy Gogates see a lack of physical spaces to park posing an ongoing challenge despite this,

"We don't have enough parking spaces so if you add up the per space, how much it would cost, I'm not sure you're going to make any money on it if you can in fact break even."

In a statement from the Milton Mayor, he emphasizes that much work is still to be done in consideration of this parking option,

"Currently, there is a proposal under consideration to delve into the introduction of paid parking and various alternative options. However, this notion remains conceptual and has not progressed towards actual implementation," said John Collier. "This examination involves a comprehensive exploration of all potential resolutions, including partnerships between the public and private sectors. The town lacks ownership of suitable spaces to expand parking in the Town Center, but there are privately owned areas adjacent to it, occasionally used for parking during noteworthy events. While the town values the kindness of these owners, it cannot insist on their unrestricted use. The execution of such a program carries obstacles and associated expenses, and until a clear understanding of those obstacles and expenses is obtained, a final decision will not be made.

However, Sam Wilson who has lived in Milton for seven years, said the paid parking is a good incentive to keep spots readily available downtown for visitors and the town's growing population,

"I think the way things are growing around here, it would help people to get in town, buy whatever they need to buy or go shopping or eat and then leave. So I think it would help out."
