Trick or treat

Many towns throughout Sussex County are preparing for trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Halloween is right around the corner, which means kids are putting the final touches on this year's costumes and parents are preparing for incoming sugar highs. Halloween night 2023 is looking like a pretty sweet night in many towns, with varying hours set to collect candy. Additional festivities are also scheduled throughout the week and into the weekend.

MILTON

Milton's night of trick-or-treating is on Halloween beginning at 6 and running until 8 p.m. The town's website says the event is town wide.

Additionally, Wicked Weekend kicks off on Saturday in downtown Milton. There will be a monster movie, pumpkin painting, scary stories, a terror train and more. The Milton Chamber of Commerce and member businesses will be hosting the Fantasy Trail and Haunted Walk around Memorial Park, complete with a variety of themed stations. Local businesses will also have additional experiences planned throughout the downtown area. The event is free and will run from 5 to 8 p.m.

LEWES

Trick-or-treating in Lewes is set for Halloween night from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Kings Highway will be closed from Savannah Road to McFee Street for the safety of participants.

REHOBOTH BEACH

On Route 1, there will be Trick-or-Treat Off the Street at all three Tanger Outlet centers. Kids under 12 can participate from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Over 40 stores will be participating.

There will be multiple earlier opportunities for trick-or-treating thanks to this year's Sea Witch festival. Kids can dress up and hunt for candy at the Schellville Spooktacular Kids Zone on Friday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. 

Also as part of Sea Witch, there will be an opportunity to trick-or-treat in downtown Rehoboth on Saturday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Downtown Rehoboth Beach Business Community. Roads will be reopening after the costume parade Saturday, so participants are encouraged to be careful and safe and to use crosswalks.

DEWEY BEACH

Some businesses in Dewey Beach will have signs in their windows designating their locations as trick-or-treat stations. The event is sponsored by the Dewey Business Partnership as part of Sea Witch and is free, set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Officials urge participants to use crosswalks and wear reflective clothing for safety.

MILLVILLE

Children and families are invited to trick-or-treat on the Trail of Treats at Evans Park on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. There will also be games for kids, prizes, a pumpkin patch and pumpkin decorating.

Families and businesses are invited to set up a table or tent along the trail to hand out treats, as well as decorate their space for the chance to win additional prizes. There is no entry or space reservation fee, but the town asks that those interested in handing out candy pre-register by Oct. 24.

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

In Milford, trick-or-treating is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween. Parents are encouraged to accompany children throughout the night and residents planning to participate are asked to keep a porch or similar light on so kids know who is handing out treats.

GEORGETOWN

Neighborhoods throughout the Town of Georgetown are welcoming trick-or-treaters from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween.

Additionally, Delaware State Police, DelDOT and the Division of Motor Vehicles are partnering for a trunk-or-treat. The event will be held at the Georgetown DMV location on Route 113 on Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m.

MILLSBORO

Trick-or-treat is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. in Millsboro on Oct. 31.

DELMAR

The Delmar High School Key Club is hosting a trick-or-treat event at the school on Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. The club has asked that the event focus on children 12 and younger.

The Delmar Public Library is also participating in Halloween, with a trunk-or-treat scheduled in the library's parking lot at 6 p.m. on Oct. 31.

FELTON

The Town of Felton's official trick-or-treating hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. There will be a costume contest beginning at 5:30 in the town hall parking lot for categories like cutest costume, scariest costume, most original and best group.

FARMINGTON

Trunk-or-treat is scheduled for Halloween from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Farmington Fire Hall. A costume contest will begin at 7. Additionally, there will be free hotdogs and a showing of a spooky movie.

SALISBURY, MD

There will be a trunk-or-treat at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury on Oct. 26. TidalHealth team members will decorate their vehicles for this family-friendly candy collection. Families are encouraged to attend from 6 to 8 p.m. CoastTV's Petey the Peacock will be there, along with a kid's costume fashion show, music, food and shaved ice trucks and a tumbling demonstration from the Maryland Twisters.

Parking is available on Old Vine Street in the gravel lots across from the TidalHealth Foundation Giving House. A rain date has been set for Oct. 27.
