SALISBURY, Md. - A woman was hurt Thursday when a fire damaged a home on Madison Street in Salisbury, prompting an airlift to a burn center and displacing the family, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The fire broke out shortly after noon at 610 Madison Street, in a one-story rental house occupied by Kristina Russelburg. Investigators said the occupant discovered the fire, which started on the front porch.
A total of 25 firefighters from the Salisbury Fire Department responded and brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command flew the woman to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center. Russelburg's injuries were described as non-life threatening.
First responders estimated damage to be at $15,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents. Investigators noted that while a smoke alarm was present in the home, it failed to activate.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
