Rehoboth Beach City Leaders Create Plans to Improve Bicycle Travel and Safety

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del - Thursday members of Rehoboth Beach's Streets and Transportation Committee met to brainstorm potential changes to the city's travel infrastructure. Much of the discussion centered around improving travel and traffic by enhancing bike entry points into the city and Rehoboth Avenue.

“All of them are marked and ride-able and inviting to bicyclists until you enter the town and then the bicycles are on their own," said committee member Bruce Kauffman. Following this statement he asked the group, "how does a cyclist get to a meaningful destination? How do they get to a restaurant? How do they get to the bandstand.”

A solution proposed during the discussion was extending pre-existing bike lanes. However, it was concluded that for now, a safer and more practical solution would be to install shared lane markings or "sharrows". Moving forward the committee will formalize plans proposing DelDOT and the City work together to install said sharrows from Second to Rehoboth Avenue.

Many other propositions are in the works and early discussion phases for the committee. In the pipeline includes establishing a potential city-wide shuttle service and working with local businesses to bring bike-sharing to Grove Park. "With the new dock I think that could be really nice if we could have bike sharing to start at grove park and other places as well and I really think we could get a grant for that," said Rehoboth Beach City Commissioner Pat Coluzzi.
