The South Bethany Canal Water Quality Committee is set to meet Monday morning to discuss spring harvesting plans in the latest effort to improve water quality.
It's not a big improvement but every little step counts. The Chesapeake Bay Program announced Monday that 29.8 percent of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries met water quality standards for the 2020-2022 assessment period. That is a small improvement over the 28.1 percent recorded during 2019-2021.
Residents of South Bethany are raising concerns over deteriorating water quality within the canals. Recent data indicates a significant issue with the water's dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. Lower DO levels can lead to a lack of fish and an increase in algae growth.
