Algae in South Bethany's canals.

SOUTH BETHANY, Del. — South Bethany is exploring a new approach to combat an old environmental issue, persistent algae growth in its canals.

The Town Council is set to discuss at its Friday meeting, a proposed pilot program this morning presented by SOLitude Lake Management, a company that specializes in aquatic restoration and algae control.

Algae buildup has long troubled the coastal community, raising concerns over water quality and aesthetics. In 2023, the town hired an independent contractor to harvest algae in an effort to clear the canals.

Last year, town officials also reported a significant issue with dissolved oxygen levels in the water, a condition that can threaten aquatic life and worsen algae blooms.
