Thailand says China must make a formal extradition request if it wants two Uyghur men returned, in response to growing concerns about their fate if they are sent back. The two men, in letters shared last week, are pleading not to be sent back to China after being held in Thailand for over a decade. Human rights activists say the men may meet with abuse or torture if returned. The activists and some Thai politicians have raised concerns about their deportation. The men, detained in 2014, are currently held at an immigration center in Bangkok. Human rights groups fear their deportation is imminent. Thailand deported 40 Uyghurs to China last year.
Myanmar has dropped its case against former American Chamber of Commerce board member Munimul Islam and withdrawn an Interpol red notice after finding insufficient evidence to support his extradition. Spanish authorities have ended proceedings against him. The dispute also led to the arrests of two former AmCham Myanmar officials who were later released or deported. Islam said Monday that his detention caused significant personal and reputational harm and is considering legal action. He has accused those involved of abusing judicial processes.
Federal prosecutors say a Guatemalan man who was extradited to the U.S. to face charges related to a smuggling attempt that left 53 migrants dead was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday. The migrants had been transported through Texas in a sweltering tractor-trailer with no air conditioning in June 2022. Prosecutors say 39-year-old Rigoberto Román Miranda-Orozco admitted to arranging the travel and accommodations for two of the people who died and one who was seriously injured. Others, including the truck's driver, still face sentencing in what became the nation’s deadliest smuggling attempt along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Saudi national was reportedly close to fleeing to Saudi Arabia. Abdulrahman Alfozan's wife and son left the U.S. after his arrest, with tickets paid for by a Saudi military official. Prosecutors argue Alfozan has resources and foreign support, noting Saudi Arabia has no extradition treaty with the U.S. Alfozan's lawyers claim the trip was planned for paternity leave and that he was pursuing U.S. citizenship. A judge will decide on his detention.

A Brazilian Supreme Court justice issued a warrant on Thursday for the arrest of Eduardo Bolsonaro. He is one of the brothers of presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. Eduardo Bolsonaro was sentenced in June to four years in prison for lobbying the Trump administration. Bolsonaro is a former lawmaker who lives in Texas and is a green card holder. He is accused of lobbying to impose sanctions against members of the Brazilian government. The U.S. and Brazil have had an extradition agreement since 1961. But it wasn't immediately clear whether the terms would apply. Justice Alexandre de Moraes’ decision on Thursday came less than three weeks before a runoff for the country’s presidency between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro.
