World War II veterans, families and community members gathered at Fort Miles in Cape Henlopen State Park to mark 81 years since Japan’s formal surrender and the end of World War II. Veterans George McCarthy and Raymond Sproul reflected on their wartime service and the friends and fellow service members they lost. The annual Victory over Japan Day ceremony also honored the 774 Delawareans who died during World War II.
LEWES, Del.- The Fort Miles Museum was alive with reverence today as the community gathered for the 8th Annual Victory Over Japan Ceremony, marking the end of World War II.
LEWES, Del - An artifact from the battleship USS Arizona has made its long journey to the Delaware coast. The Fort Miles Museum received the piece of the ship that was sunk during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
