LEWES, Del. - Volunteers from the Delaware Face Mask Project delivered hundreds of masks to those with the Cape Henlopen School District and Montessori School on Wednesday morning.
The project is sponsored by the local chapter of the group Volunteer Delaware 50+.
"It's nice to be able to contribute something, I hadn't sewn for probably 30 years so it's an old skill I didn't know I still had," said Rita Gilbert, from Delaware Volunteer Face Mask project.
The group calls Gilbert, the "super stitcher," because she has sewn 1,050 masks. 587 masks were delivered for Cape Henlopen students ranging in size and patterns.
"It goes to show what our community does for us each and every year. It's great to be apart of the school district and educate our students, but it always takes a village and today shows that. I'm just very grateful and the kids are going to be really excited come Wednesday," said Cape Henlopen Assistant Superintendent, Jenny Nauman.
The Montessori School asked for uniform masks. There are 631 masks for children in kindergarten and third grade, and 140 for the adults.
"They learned about our making masks for Nanitcoke Hospital, and we knew we had the right group to do it. So we said get us the material and the elastic and we'll get on it for ya, and within two weeks we were able to come up with all these masks for the school, and the kids will be ready to go on Monday," said Kim Ostroski Volunteer with TidalHealth Nanticoke.
The Volunteer Delaware Face Mask project has yet to announce any new projects. The group says for now they'll keep making masks
