DelawareCan is working to create a digital interactive map that would allow parents to easily compare proficiency scores from schools across the state.

DELAWARE - Local nonprofit, DelawareCan, has plans to create a digital interactive map of up-to-date proficiency levels for each subject for all Delaware schools.

This map shows proficiency levels for schools in New Mexico, but DelawareCan said this is very similar to what they're looking to create for the first state.

According to DelawareCan, over one in four schools in Delaware have a math or English score less than 25 percent.

Neyda Albarran, is a single mother in Milford. She says having tools, like this map, means parents can make a more informed choice on where to send their kids to learn.

"To be able to find a place, and not just by hear say but by data, and be able to have scientific answers that can help you make that choice, then that is just invaluable."

Britney Mumford with DelawareCan said this tool is meant to establish accountability to better schools.

"The side by side comparison is not to punish or demean schools but we truly believe that by being as transparent as possible we can learn about the schools that need the most help. It encourages more people to be part of the solution to get those schools and those parents where we're at."

The tool will cost about $10,000 to create. The nonprofit hopes to launch the map by the end of the year.
