Beat the Peak Delaware Electric Coop meters out of service

DELMARVA - As of Oct. 1, Beat the Peak home indicators from the Delaware Electric Cooperative will no longer operate. The energy company says that, due to antiquated, expensive technology required for them to work, the program has been discontinued.

Co-op members are encouraged to download the new Beat the Peak app to receive peak alerts, which will come as a notification. The app also includes tips to save energy and money and shows how much money has been saved through the Beat the Peak program since it began in 2008.

"By saving electricity during these peak alert times, members can help the coop keep the cost of energy affordable," the company said in a statement. "Even as technology changes, we appreciate all our members' continued efforts to help DEC provide affordable energy to the people and places we power."

A plan is in the works to develop a system for members to receive peak alerts via automated phone calls, too. It is expected to launch in spring 2024. In the meantime, those with old meters can recycle them at a DSWA electronic recycling center.
