MILLSBORO, Del. - Blessings for Badges is an organization of about 50 volunteers that spend their Thanksgiving day cooking and delivering meals to the first responders working the holiday.

This operation has been feeding first responders for the last six years. The secretary of the organization says it all started because the president's father was a police officer who also worked many holidays.

"I love to see the photos from the actual delivery drivers who deliver them to the police and the fire and the rescue and then just see their smiles," said Secretary Cathy Bassett. "It can really make someone's day to know that somebody else cares about them and that their thought of on a day like today so that's what keeps us all coming back year after year."

Alisa Hassler and her daughter Catherine have volunteered to deliver the meals each year since the group began,

"We have fun doing it. We have a good time and we get to meet people and some of the people that we deliver to are friends of ours too, so we get to see them on the holiday."

Police, firefighters, EMT's, and more continue to serve the community on Thanksgiving and wish to remind all that enjoying the holiday to be extra careful.

"Because of the traffic, because there's more people on the road, we do have more traffic accidents this time of year and a few cooking mishaps also." said Jerry Brown, firefighter and EMT with the Milton Fire Department.

Blessings for Badges currently serves Sussex County and Kent County but hopes to expand into New Castle County as well to make sure everyone gets a piece of the pie this Thanksgiving.
