Blood donation

The Blood Bank is encouraging people to donate blood between June 27 and July 7.

DELAWARE- The Blood Bank of Delmarva is sounding the alarm over a critical shortage of blood just days before the busy 4th of July weekend. Donations across Delaware are trending 38% lower than what local hospitals need.

According to the organization, the shortage is particularly severe for type O-negative and type B-negative blood. Type O-negative is especially crucial in trauma care because it can be used in emergencies before a patient’s blood type is known.

The Blood Bank is encouraging people in the region to donate blood between June 27 and July 7. As a thank-you gift, donors at any center or community drive will receive a branded T-shirt or a packable backpack.

“Summer is always a difficult time for the blood supply, but this year has been exceptionally difficult, with blood collections even lower than typical,” said Keith Heim, Vice President at Blood Bank of Delmarva. “You can help by donating, hosting a drive, or volunteering – and we’ve got a t-shirt or backpack waiting as a thank-you.”

The organization says each summer, blood donations tend to drop due to school breaks, vacations, and other commitments. However, this year’s decline is sharper than expected. Summer is also often referred to as “trauma season” because of the increase in outdoor activities and accidents. About 1 in 4 trauma patients need a blood transfusion, according to The Blood Bank of Delmarva.

In addition to donors, the blood bank is asking local businesses, schools, religious organizations, and community groups to help by organizing blood drives or volunteering.

Due to updated Food and Drug Administration guidance, more people than ever are now eligible to give blood. Donors can give whole blood every 56 days and platelets up to twice a month.
