Marsh Road Intersection

A Lewes business owner is calling for immediate safety improvements at the Marsh Road and Wescoats Road intersection after two reported crashes over the weekend, while DelDOT says a roundabout is planned next year to improve safety.

LEWES, Del. — A Lewes business owner is urging DelDOT to make temporary safety improvements at the intersection of Marsh Road and Wescoats Road after she says two crashes occurred there within an hour over the weekend.

Ellen Magee, owner of Magee Farms, said employees witnessed both crashes Sunday morning.

Magee said the intersection, which currently operates as a two-way stop, has become increasingly dangerous because of heavy traffic.

"Somebody is going to lose their life," Magee said.

She said DelDOT should install temporary measures such as stop signs, flashing lights or other traffic controls until a permanent solution is completed.

DelDOT said it plans to construct a roundabout at the intersection, with construction expected to begin in February 2027. The agency has said many Sussex County roads were not designed for today's traffic volumes and that roundabouts improve safety by reducing conflict points and slowing driving speeds.

Magee said she believes drivers need relief sooner.

"They have got to put up either stop signs or flashing lights," she said. "There's something they could do in the interim before they put the roundabout in."

According to DelDOT, between 2007 and 2017 there were 40 reported crashes at this intersection.
