DOVER, Del - A record setting day led Cape Henlopen High School's Unified Track & Field Team to the 2024 Delaware State Championship. Senior Connor Pencek set state records by winning the 400 meter with a time of 58.44 and the 200 with a time of 26.63.
It was a 1-2-3 Vikings finish in that 400 with junior Alejandro Alvarez-Roman earning the second place medal and freshman Jaxon Benton the third place medal.
Cape won the title while competing in not ideal weather conditions. "They persevered through the rain and performed their best," head coach Lisa Thorpe said. She also recognized assistant coach Kelly Cerf for her contributions to the team.
A time of 12.73 by senior Tony Palmer was tops in the 100 meter.
Palmer's long jump distance of 15-02.75 earned a second place medal. Junior Carrie Reed finished in second place in the girls long jump with a distance of 11-01.00.
Cape took first in the 4X200 thanks the relay team of Alvarez-Roman, Pencek, freshman Noah Wilson, and sophomore Mason Furman
Senior Elle Nauman won first place in the girls 400 meter with a time of 1:23.01. While Senior Brooke Kochinsky finished second.
Kochinsky finished second in the girls shotput and Reed was third.
Junior Layla Ward and Reed ended second and third respectively in the girls 100 meter. In the girls 200 meter, it was the same result for the two Vikings with Ward and Reed again finishing second and third.
