GEORGETOWN, Del. - The final six miles of the Georgetown-Lewes Trail are nearing completion, with DelDOT saying the full trail is expected to open this fall.

The 11-mile trail currently runs from Cape Henlopen State Park to Fisher Road in Georgetown. The final section still needs fresh pavement in some areas and signs installed along the trail. The last section carries a price tag of $17.5 million. The first section of the trail opened 10 years ago.

For people like Nicole Walker, who regularly uses the trail while running with a weighted backpack, the shaded sections are one of the biggest draws.

“It’s been great to have this trail here,” Walker said. “It’s so much cooler.”

Walker said the tree-covered portions of the trail make a major difference, especially during warmer weather.

Once complete, the Georgetown-Lewes Trail is expected to become the longest continuous path in Delaware, passing a trail in New Castle County.

For now, trail users are still reaching the end and turning around. But once the final stretch opens, they will be able to continue another six miles toward Georgetown.

A DelDOT spokesperson told CoastTV that the agency expects to have an exact opening date as the project gets closer to fall.
