DELAWARE- Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) Secretary Molly Magarik had a dire warning for people who do not take the coronavirus seriously while ringing in 2022.
"If you are gathering with people indoors and you do not have a mask on over this next week and on New Year’s Eve, you should expect to test positive with COVID," Magarik said.
The guidance is the same as it has always been: get vaccinated, wear a mask, get tested, stay home if you’re sick, and wash your hands regularly. Governor John Carney said to not be surprised if there are empty seats at parties or dinner tables.
"You’ll likely have an uninvited guest at your new year’s party and it’s someone who is maybe asymptomatic but positive either with the Delta or the Omicron COVID-19 virus," Carney said.
The latest data shows that there are 454 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state which is just twenty less than the record set on January 14.
The strains on the hospitals means more hands are needed on deck. A state of emergency effective Monday will allow about 100 National Guard members to become certified nursing assistants and care for patients.
The governor and DHSS also extended the Public Emergency Order for thirty more days to continue statewide vaccinations and testing services.
Bayhealth leaders joined Governor Carney during Thursday's briefing. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gary Siegelman explains the capacity issues that are only expected to get worse.
"Our number of COVID patients have gone up by about fifty percent in the last twenty days and if you were to continue that for the next twenty days it would mean over fifty percent of our beds are occupied by COVID patients."
Bottomline, if you want to celebrate safely this New Year’s eve and avoid a visit to the emergency room: masking up continues to be the top safety measure.
