DELAWARE- The Food Bank of Delaware is seeking the help of backyard gardeners for fresh produce donations.

Donations can help the food bank to continue their fight against food insecurity in the state while also reducing food waste. Gardeners with a surplus of fruits and vegetables are encouraged to share their produce with those who need it most.

“This is a great way to share the abundance with those who are struggling to put meals on the table,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Cathy Kanefsky. “Even a small donation makes a big difference.”

For those interested in donating, the nonprofit notes some donation guidelines.

Donors should avoid storing fresh produce in trash bags, as chemicals could leak into the food. Gardeners should also strive to donate only good quality food and to remove as much soil or mud as possible from the produce.

Donors can drop off their fruits and vegetables at the Food Bank of Delaware in Milford or Newark. They can also donate to various Food Bank of Delaware partner food pantries located across the state. For a full list of drop-off locations, visit their website
