GEORGETOWN, Del. — The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride honored Georgetown firefighter and EMT Thomas Berry III on Wednesday. The nonprofit group pays tribute to first responders who have died across the country.

Their latest stop was in Georgetown, where they remembered several fallen heroes from Delaware. Friends and family of Berry gathered for a ceremony at the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center. During the tribute, Berry’s mother and sister were presented with custom-made dog tags by Ginny Meerman, a close family friend.

Meerman, who is participating in her second year with the nonprofit, said she is riding specifically in Berry’s memory.

“Thomas tragically died in August. I knew that I was going to ride for him, so nothing was going to stop me from riding. And I was riding specifically for Thomas,” Meerman said.

The group plans to stay overnight in Rehoboth Beach before continuing on to Kent Island. From there, the ride will end in Annapolis.
