UPDATED: Dolle's Owner Confirms Historic Sign Will Move Wednesday

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -The famous salt water taffy, popcorn, and other delicious treats has always been signified by its 15 foot high, 30 foot wide sign that weighs over 3,700 pounds.

The work is scheduled to take place Wednesday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. until about 10 a.m. The horseshoe by the bandstand will close at 5 a.m. No other streets are expected to close during the move. A short part of the boardwalk will be shut down while the sign is lowered.

It is a landmark and a spot that means so much to Dolle’s Owner Tom Ibach but also to the many people who live and visit the nation’s summer capital.

"Everybody kind of knows it," Ibach said. "I mean people kind of know it and have taken pictures with it. Wedding pictures. We even had someone who wanted to spread ashes in front of the Dolle’s sign. Some crazy stuff but it’s an iconic part of Delaware."

Cindy Wooleyhan of Rehoboth Beach reflects on times that she had by the sign.

"When I was a teenager that’s where we would meet our parents, take our pictures there," Wooleyhan said. "It’s kind of very nostalgic for me because it looks like a beach boardwalk with that sign there."

Its new home is tentatively the Rehoboth Beach Museum. President of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society David Mann says there was only one place it could possibly go.

"It will sit on the west side facing the canal facing Rehoboth Avenue," Mann said. "It’s the only place on the building where it fits physically and aesthetically."

The city’s board of adjustment will have to approve a variance for the sign to go up there at a meeting on December 27 and until it goes up the sign will be in a secured location.
