DELAWARE- Drivers in Delaware will soon pay more at toll plazas and the Division of Motor Vehicles as the Delaware Department of Transportation prepares to roll out increases aimed at boosting infrastructure funding.
Beginning Aug. 15, tolls across I-95, US 301, and SR 1 will rise for all drivers, including those using E-ZPass and toll-by-plate payment. For two-axle cars traveling through the I-95 Newark toll plaza, the fee will increase from $4 to $5. At the US 301 mainline toll, E-ZPass users will see a jump from $4 to $5, while toll-by-plate charges will climb from $5.60 to $7.
For those using Route 1 Biddles Corner and Dover plazas, tolls will vary by account type and day. Delaware E-ZPass holders will pay $1.50 on weekdays and $4 on weekends for two-axle cars. Those without a Delaware E-ZPass will pay $2.50 on weekdays and $6 on weekends.
DelDOT says that on Oct. 1, DMV fees will also go up. The document fee for vehicle transactions will rise from 4.25 percent to 5.25 percent. Driver’s license renewals will increase from $40 to $50, and duplicate ID cards will now cost $10, up from $5. Additional fees will apply for commercial driver endorsements, learner’s permits and specialty plates.
Owners of alternative fuel vehicles registered in Delaware will be required to pay a new annual fee ranging from $15 for motorcycles to $900 for large trucks over 26,000 pounds, according to DelDOT. More than 48,000 vehicles are expected to be affected.
DelDOT estimates these increases will generate $107 million annually to help maintain and improve roads, bridges and related transportation projects statewide.
