Minos Conaway Road and Route One intersection

Minos Conaway Road and Route One intersection in Lewes.

LEWES, Del. - The Minos Conaway Project will soon be underway with new traffic changes that DelDOT says will increase safety. This includes three roundabouts.

People all over Sussex County have shared what they call horror stories about the intersection of Minos Conaway Road and Route one, including a car accident that took place last summer that left two six year old children seriously injured.

A video DelDOT created shows a new service road and roundabout will go to Minos Conaway. Further south will be two new roundabouts and an extended New Road to keep traffic off the highway.

"We think it's going to have a dramatic impact on how local traffic moves around this area," said C.R. McLeod, DelDOT's Director of Community Relations.

Dan Jayjock lives two minutes from the intersection. He says traffic changes are long overdue.

"Well, I think it's beautiful as far as safety is concerned. I'm glad that we're still supposedly able to get out on route one the same way we do now," Jayjock shared.

Pam Mertz isn't on the roundabout bandwagon but says she's all for a safer solution.

"I think the roundabouts have been confusing for some people but I know they need to do something," said Mertz.

McLeod says adding roundabouts increases the safety while continuing the flow of traffic.

"It's not a safe crossing and this project will specifically eliminate that that crossover in that immediate area as well," McLeod explained.

Construction is expected to start somewhere between late June and July, however McLeod says utility work could start in the next month.
