Delaware DMV officials say the new online service will save thousands of DMV visits each year.

DELAWARE- The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles has rolled out a new online service that allows people to keep their license plates after selling their vehicle out of state, saving thousands of DMV visits each year.

The agency says, registered owners who want to keep an unexpired tag after selling their car, truck, or SUV outside of Delaware can now do so online by visiting their website, and selecting "online services." Once the form is submitted and the tag is confirmed as active, the plate will be retained.

“Ultimately, the goal is to better serve Delaware residents with quick and efficient service,” said Delaware Transportation Secretary Shanté Hastings. “We process approximately 8,600 sold-out-of-state transactions yearly. By moving the process online, we save our customers nearly 9,000 trips to the DMV. It helps streamline the process as well as reduces the number of people waiting in our lobbies.”

DMV Director Amy Anthony echoed the benefits of the change, saying the update is about convenience. “We enjoy assisting our customers at the DMV, but understand their time constraints and the convenience being able to process transactions online brings to their lives,” Anthony said. “By automating this process and adding the option to our online services repertoire, we give over 700 customers a month more time in their day to do something other than wait at the DMV.”
