LEWES, Del. - Neurologist and epileptologist Dr. Jessica Lowe has been announced as the winner of this year's Go Red for Women Delaware Woman of Impact award by the American Heart Association.
The AHA says Dr. Lowe raised over $88,000 over a nine-week period, putting her in the top five in the Eastern State Region which spans 11 states. In addition, Dr. Lowe with the help of her family and friends engaged with the community through various educational initiatives, including stroke and neurological lectures, a step challenge to encourage active living, and using social media to engage with women's health content.
According to the AHA, cardiovascular disease claims the lives in one in three women, making it the leading cause of death for women in the US and disproportionally affects women of color. The AHA also says that nearly 45% of women over the age of 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease, with life stages like pregnancy and menopause increasing the risks of developing heart troubles.
“Thanks to the efforts of incredible leaders like Dr. Lowe and all of our nominees, we’re making strides to ensure all women in Delaware are seen, heard and counted when it comes to their health,” said Jim Murphy, Executive Director of the American Heart Association, Delaware. “Together, we have the power to help ensure more women are represented in research, have the information they need for heart health through every stage of life and receive quality and timely care. The power of our community coming together creates better health outcomes for all of us.”
Dr. Lowe says that she's honored to receive the award and looks forward to working with the AHA and its future initiatives.
“It was important for me to participate in Woman of Impact because, as a physician, I see firsthand how cardiovascular disease affects women at every stage of life," said Dr. Lowe. "I want to be part of the change that helps ensure women have the knowledge and tools they need to protect their health.”
