DOVER, Del. — Delaware State Police arrested two Baltimore residents Friday after a high-speed chase involving two stolen vehicles. A third suspect is still in the hospital, injured in a crash at the end of one of the two car chases.
Jonathan Bennett, 32, and Hailey Warren, 20, both of Baltimore, were taken into custody and face multiple felony charges. Kyle Norman, 20, also from Baltimore, is expected to be charged upon release from the hospital.
According to state police, at 5 a.m. on June 20 a trooper noticed a blue Hyundai Sonata closely following a blue Hyundai Santa Fe on Bay Road in Dover. A computer check confirmed the Santa Fe was reported stolen on June 18 and the Sonata earlier that morning. The thefts were reported to the Baltimore County Police Department.
When troopers tried to pull the vehicles over both drivers took off creating two separate car car chases.Â
Santa Fe Pursuit
The Santa Fe tried to escape from troopers by speeding through Kent and Sussex Counties. At one point, the driver hit the brakes suddenly, causing the trooper to hit the rear of the vehicle.
The chase ended near South Old State Road and Dupont Boulevard in Georgetown when the driver lost control and crashed into a wooded area. The driver, identified as Norman, was seriously injured and was flown to a hospital. Passengers included Warren, a 13-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old girl, were all taken for treatment of minor injuries. The trooper involved in the crash was also seriously hurt and taken to a hospital.
According to police, a screwdriver was recovered from under the driver’s seat, a tool commonly associated with car thieves.
Sonata Pursuit
At the same time, police say the Sonata was also driving recklessly. Stop sticks were deployed by troopers on Route 1 near Cave Neck Road in Milton, but the vehicle managed to get away.
Troopers responded shortly afterward to reports of three suspicious individuals on bicycles on Oyster Rocks Road. They located Bennett, a 13-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old boy. All three were taken into custody without incident. A screwdriver was found on Bennett during a search.
The stolen Sonata was later found abandoned in the parking lot of Shell We Bounce Trampoline Park in Lewes. Surveillance footage and investigation identified the 10-year-old boy as the driver, Bennett as the front passenger, and the girl in the back seat. Due to his age, the 10-year-old could not be charged under Delaware law.
Charges
Bennett was charged with felony receiving stolen property, felony conspiracy, possession of burglar tools, two counts of reckless endangering, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on an $11,000 secured bond.
Warren was charged with felony receiving stolen property and felony conspiracy. She was arraigned and held on a $4,000 secured bond.
Norman will be charged upon release from the hospital with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, four counts of first-degree reckless endangering, possession of burglar tools, felony receiving stolen property, felony fleeing, felony conspiracy, criminal mischief, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, aggressive driving, and other traffic violations.
