MILFORD, Del. - The Food Bank of Delaware in Milford is now using solar power under a partnership with Energize Delaware and CMI Electric.
This morning, leaders unveiled 719 rooftop solar panels as part of the partnership.Â
Food bank officials say because of the $1,017,000 grant from Energize Delaware Under, they will now be able to produce an estimated 546 megawatt-hours.
The Food Bank of Delaware says the array is projected to offset approximately 60 percent of our annual electricity usage in Milford, resulting in an estimated $37,342.92 in annual utility savings. (Food Bank of Delaware)
As food insecurity continues to worsen, the food bank sees this as a great opportunity to invest more money in the fight against hunger.
"We always say money doesn't grow on trees, and neither, you know, does the food that we provide to our community. So for us to be able to purchase more food, to be able to supply, you know, to meet the growing need, this is just a it's a godsend," says Cathy Kanefsky, President and CEO of the Food Bank of Delaware.
With more financial resources available, the food bank says it is looking to invest in meals tailored to those with dietary restrictions in particular.
