GEORGETOWN, Del.- Sussex County paramedics are offering a free training session that could help save lives during active shooter situations and other emergencies. The event is set for May 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sussex County Public Safety Complex in Georgetown.
The Civilian Response and Casualty Care course is based on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy developed in 2004 by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center at Texas State University. The course aims to prepare people to respond effectively in the event of an active shooter attack.
The session will include both a presentation and hands-on skill training, including how to apply a tourniquet to stop arterial bleeding and how to perform CPR.
"The national standard from the time somebody contacts 911 until somebody is knocking on their door is eight minutes," said Glenn Marshall with Sussex County EMS. "That is not realistic for us to be there. While we strive to achieve that on every call, it's not realistic. So again, furthering the education of the public and how they can buy us time until we get there with our equipment."
The class also includes instruction from the Stop the Bleed campaign, which teaches people how to provide potentially life-saving medical assistance in emergencies.
Topics will cover the history and frequency of active shooter events, civilian response strategies, medical considerations, and post-event recovery. Sussex County EMS says it hopes to offer these training sessions at least every other month.
