Georgetown Town Council Discuss water and sewer impact fees

Currently, developers are charged $7,400 per sewer connection and $1,599 for each water connection. Under a new proposal, these fees could be reduced on a case-by-case basis, depending on whether the development includes infrastructure improvements that support the town’s long-term needs.

GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Georgetown Town Council are in the early stages to decrease water and sewer impact fees for developers, but only if their projects provide a clear benefit to the town.

Currently, developers are charged $7,400 per sewer connection and $1,599 for each water connection. Under a new proposal, these fees could be reduced on a case-by-case basis, depending on whether the development includes infrastructure improvements that support the town’s long-term needs.

Town Manager Gene Dvornick said the change is intended to incentivize developers to contribute to necessary infrastructure upgrades.

"It affords the town the ability to do improvements," Dvornick said. "If we need a sewer line that runs through a property being developed, we can ask that developer to install a deeper sewer line or larger water lines. In exchange, the town is willing to forego part of the impact fees."

Officials believe this strategy will encourage growth while ensuring critical infrastructure keeps pace with new development. The proposal is still under review and would require formal approval by the council before taking effect.
