MILFORD, Del. — A deadly crash involving multiple cars shut down the southbound lanes of Delaware Route 1 near Argos Corner Road for about four hours Friday morning, according to the Carlisle Fire Company.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m., leaving the engine block of a car lying in the middle of the highway and several cars resting in the grass median. Fire crews from Milford, Milton, Slaughter Beach and Ellendale responded to the scene to help the people who were hurt and secure the roadway.
The deadly crash shut down part of Route One for hours.
According to Carlisle Fire Company, three people were involved in the accident. One person was killed, another was critically hurt, and a third person had minor injuries. 71-year-old Peter Surdo from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania was the man killed, said DSP.
Traffic was diverted onto area roads until the southbound lanes reopened roughly four hours later.
Local David Heffley says people just need to slow down.
"Driving down in lower, slower, Delaware... It's no longer lower, slower, Delaware," said Heffley.
He says something needs to be done.
"Obviously improvements for the infrastructure, but that's going to take a while, if ever. More increased police protection will help to a point, but really it's education. I think, the young drivers need to be educated," said Heffley. "They're not aware sometimes that they're driving a lethal instrument. Really... It's what an automobile can be."
Gretchen Bienert, a local, says she tries to avoid Route 1 entirely.
"I found back roads, which is much better. Less traffic. But, people are just so much in a hurry. It's ridiculous. So I avoid it," said Bienert.
