House Bill 82 aims to ensure Delaware school board members live in their districts

A bill introduced in the Delaware General Assembly would require school board candidates and members to live in the districts they represent and spend most of the year physically present there, according to lawmakers.

DELAWARE- A bill introduced in the Delaware General Assembly would require school board candidates and members to live in the districts they represent and spend most of the year physically present there, according to lawmakers.

House Bill 82 states that if a school board member is outside the district for more than 75 percent of the days in any 12-month period during their term, the member would no longer qualify as an inhabitant. Lawmakers say time away due to military service would not count as an absence.

Under the bill, anyone who believes a board member no longer meets the requirement could ask Superior Court to declare the seat vacant.
