Paramedic Crash

A paramedic unit heading to a call were struck by a work truck in Lewes early Friday morning.

LEWES, Del. —  A paramedic unit traveling northbound on Wescoats Road with emergency lights and a siren activated was struck by a work truck Friday morning, sending all three people involved to the hospital with injuries that appeared to be minor, according to Delaware State Police.

Troopers said the crash happened at about 7 a.m. at the intersection of Wescoats Road and Marsh Lane. Investigators determined that the work truck was heading east on Marsh Lane and failed to stop at the posted stop sign before entering the intersection. The truck crashed into the paramedic vehicle as it was en route to a separate emergency call.

Both paramedics and the driver of the work truck were transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries.

This is the second time in a month a paramedic unit has been hit by another driver. The last instance was in Milton on Route 16 and Mulberry Street. The woman who hit the paramedics later died.

The Lewes crash remains under investigation. It snarled traffic for hours, according to DelDOT.
