Harbeson April 14 Crash

HARBESON, Del. - One man is in critical condition after a car crash on Route 5 near Johnson Road, according to the Lewes Fire Department.

The crash occurred just before 11 a.m. on Friday. Delaware State Police say a 40-year-old man from Milford was driving north when, for unknown reasons, he drove off the side of the road, through the grass, and into a mailbox and steep ditch. The car then hit a pipe, went airborne, and overturned before also hitting an electrical box and cable box.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt, according to police, and was removed from the car by the fire department before being taken to an area hospital. As of Saturday evening his injuries remain serious. Police say a preliminary investigation suggests impairment was a factor.

Harbeson Road was closed for around two hours on Friday immediately following the crash to allow for the roadway to be cleared and the investigation to take place.
