Benefit Raises Money for Memorial to Fallen First Responders

People in Delmar are hosting a fundraiser Friday night to help build a memorial to fallen police officers.

The Fallen Officer Memorial Benefit takes place form 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Delmar Veterans of Foreign War (VFW). The event is raising money to put a bronze statue out front of the Delmar Police Department. Delmar's own Corporal Keith Heacook was killed in the line of duty earlier this year. The statue will honor him and all fallen first responders.

The proposed design shows a kneeling officer wearing Corporal Heacook's uniform.

Cory Shaffer, a co-planner of the benefit, came together with other individuals in Delmar to show their support and appreciation for law enforcement.

"Anybody, you know, if they need a moment of solitude or they're having a bad day, you can stop by, look at it, and realize that this was all privately funded with support from the community and the community does care about our law enforcement officers," Shaffer said.

The statue is expected to cost $20,000, but they're aiming to raise $25,000. You can donate to the cause by contacting the Delmar VFW.
