MILFORD, Del. - After months of parents looking for changes to the school district's dress code and about 300 signatures on a petition, the school board agreed to start a committee to address concerns.
Emily Barry is just one parent of hundreds to sign a petition to change the Milford School District's dress code policy. Barry said her son has sensory sensitivities that can be set off by different types of fabrics,
"Well for us personally it's been a bit of a nightmare... a lot of these khaki style pants that they say they want the students to wear, they're very uncomfortable for him."
While a grandparent of a Milford student believes a school dress code helps the low income families,
"It gives them one less thing to worry about. Let me go to school and not have to worry about if I'm showing that I have Tommy Hilfiger or whatever name brand it may be." said Patricia Hultz.
But mothers like Jessica Miles say clothing brands can lead to bullying,
"We had to wear polo shirts - and the kids would make fun of you if you wore a Walmart one, not Abercrombie, American Eagle..."
Ultimately Barry would like to see the committee end the dress code altogether and focus more on education,
"Kids who are being taken out of class or disrupted in the middle of class, it's detracting from their education. So I hope that if we can solve this problem, that that time can be better spent on some of the other issues the schools are facing."
The next Milford School Board meeting is Tuesday, September 25 at 6 p.m.
