Independence Retirement Community

MILLSBORO, Del. - First responders in Millsboro say the increase in retirees moving to the town has led to a need for a trauma center.

Millsboro Fire Company EMS Supervisor Jay Myers says, "Unfortunately, as we grow older parts don't wear in...they wear out. So when most of the residents first moved in, their health was very good, but as the years go on things start to decline."

Isabel Hostin and her husband, Howard, live in Independence, a retirement community in Millsboro. Hostin has called EMS not just once or twice, but four times in 2023 due to her husband's health issues.

"Probably the most dominant one was when he fell and broke his hip in the driveway," says Hostin. Hostin says while first responders took great care of her husband, it's something that she does worry could happen again.

The closest hospital to Millsboro offering trauma services is upstate in Wilmington.

"In order for you to get the definitive care, you are either transported by ambulance, which could take either two or two and a half hours, or we do have a Delaware state police and LifeNet EMS who fly," says Myers.

Beebe Healthcare and TidalHealth are bringing medical campuses to Millsboro, but those services will not include trauma services.

CoastTV spoke with town officials who say the town isn't involved in the process of bringing a trauma center, but they do welcome and support it.
