OCEAN CITY, Md. - The Art League of Ocean City will be presenting its First Friday art opening at the Ocean City Center for the Arts and two other galleries on April 4 from 5-7 p.m.
To celebrate the opening of the Manga and Anime exhibit on the fourth, the Art League is encouraging event goers to cosplay as characters from their favorite movies, TV shows, video games and comics. Award prizes will be given to those with the best costumes.
A student portion of the Manga and Anime show will open the same day to exhibit the creativity of students outside of formal arts programs. The entries, submitted by middle, high school, and higher education students, will be judged by University of Maryland Eastern Shore associate professors Elvin Hernandez, Brad Hudson and Collin Byrd. Cash and other prizes will be awarded by John Sisson, Art League Past President, and James Dufendach of Ocean City Comic Con, who are sponsoring the event.
That same day, the Thaler Gallery will host the "Points of Juxtaposition" featuring the work of six African-American artists from the Eastern Shore, Tony Burton, Alexander Gamble, Kenneth Jones, Michael J. Morris, Ernest Satchell, and Carl Williams. Inspired from both life in America and an older African consciousness, the event conveys the various points of views and visual styles, like those on the points of a compass, blending more than 190 years of collective experiences and perspectives.
Other exhibits and showcases include the work of the Creative Hearts program that includes artists who participate in the Salvation Army of Delaware's disability program, the Burbage Staircase Gallery at the Princess Royale gallery on 9100 Coastal Highway, presenting the photography of Angela Vinson, and more.
The Arts Center shows will be on display through April 26; the satellite galleries, through June 28. More information is available at their website or by calling 410-524-9433.
Funding for this event is in part provided by the Worcester County Arts Council, Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts.
