OCEAN CITY, Md. - The Ocean City Fire Department is undergoing a major leadership transition as Fire Chief Richard Bowers retires on Friday, capping a fire service career that spans more than four decades, according to Ocean City.

Chief Bowers, who joined the department in 2019, brought experience from leadership roles in Montgomery County and Fairfax County. Among his many accomplishments, Chief Bowers played a pivotal role in the planning and completion of the state-of-the-art Fire Station 3, which opened in 2024.

“First as City Engineer and now as City Manager, it has been an honor to work with Chief Bowers,” said City Manager Terry McGean. “I want to thank him for all his hard work and I wish him all the best for the future.”

New Acting Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Named

Succeeding Bowers as Acting Fire Chief is Joshua J. Bunting III, a third-generation firefighter. Bunting began his service at age 14 as a cadet and has spent more than 20 years in various leadership roles, including Fire Marshal, Bomb Squad Commander and Deputy Chief and is a lifelong Worcester County resident.

In tandem with Bunting’s appointment, the department also announced Joseph E. Sexauer as Acting Fire Marshal for the 2025 season. The Life Member of the Volunteer Fire Company brings over 20 years of service, including roles as Fire Inspector, Deputy Fire Marshal and Battalion Chief. He is also a certified Bomb Technician, having completed training at the FBI Hazardous Devices School, said the town.
