Real ID Driver License example

Federally compliant driver licenses and ID cards will be noted with the gold star on the top right. (Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles)

DELAWARE - Starting May 7, Delaware locals who have not updated to the Real ID driver license or identification cards will be unable to fly domestically.

The new policy was established on July 1, 2010 federally, following guidelines suggested by the 9-11 Commission after the terrorist attacks in 2001. These new identification standards are designed to combat terrorism, prevent identity theft, and other crimes by strengthening the security of state-issued documents says the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles.

The DMV does clarify that those without a federally compliant state driver license or identification card can still fly if they obtain a U.S. passport, but that the process to getting a passport is more time consuming and expensive compared to updating existing cards to Real ID.

Likewise, those without Read ID driver licenses can still drive, this change affects federal identification means. The DMV also confirms that the Department of Homeland Security will not be extending the May 7 deadline.

Those with Delaware issued drivers licenses or identification cards will know if they have the updated documentation if there is a gold star on the top right of their cards.

To update to Real ID, residents will have to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of Identity: Birth certificate, valid passport, etc.
  • Two documents proving Delaware residency: Utility bills, voter registration card, employment record, etc.
  • Proof of Social Security number: Social security card, W-2 tax form, etc.
  • Proof of name change, if applicable

The DMV says that whether this is to renew an existing card or a new application, this will be a one-time validation. However, those updating their card mid-cycle will still be charged $20 for a duplication fee.
