Weigh Station

DELMAR, Md.- Construction is underway on a major rehabilitation of the US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station in Delmar, aiming to modernize one of Maryland’s longest-serving truck inspection sites.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has launched the project along US 13 between Mallard Drive and Winner Boulevard. According to the agency, the facility, was built in 1955 as part of the original "New Generation" scale houses. It has been operated by the Maryland State Police since 1967, and is getting a full infrastructure and equipment overhaul.

The agency says the upgrades include new truck height detectors, an LED signal display, and replacement of the aging static scale with a deep pit scale and modern computer system. Beyond the scale improvements, the project will add parking for inspections on the southbound side, improve traffic barriers, lighting and CCTV cameras, and install better signage to guide drivers.

Safety enhancements are also part of the plan, including new eyewash stations and refurbished entrance gates. Old office trailers will be replaced with new modular buildings for inspections on both northbound and southbound sides.

Transportation officials say there are no plans to expand the weigh station property; all improvements will stay within the existing right-of-way.
