REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — The police departments in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes have launched a joint Police Accountability Committee aimed at promoting transparency and strengthening community relationships, according to a statement released by both agencies.
Police Chief Keith Banks of Rehoboth Beach and Police Chief Thomas Spell of Lewes announced that the committee held its first meeting June 24. The two say the new group was formed in compliance with Delaware House Bill 206, which outlines requirements for oversight and community input in policing matters.
The committee consists of six volunteer members from both communities, bringing diverse experience and local ties. According to the chiefs, the group will meet at least quarterly to provide advice on policies, training and other issues that affect both departments and the people who live there.
Chief Banks and Chief Spell expressed their enthusiasm for the committee's work and the potential to deepen trust between officers and the public.
"Chief Banks and Chief Spell are thrilled to have such a variety of volunteer committee members and are anticipating delving into many topics of interest to the committee and continuing to build greater transparency, education and community engagement," a statement read.
People interested in attending future meetings can find details on the websites of both municipalities and police departments.
