ELLENDALE, Del. - The war memorial site in Ellendale is looking to undergo renovations aimed at enhancing its appearance and honoring local veterans.
Upgrades are not expected to begin immediately after town council voted to table the discussion for a special meeting. Plans however, include adding more plants around the memorial, installing additional flagpoles to accommodate state and national flags, and even a shrub designed in the shape of an eagle.
Donald Dutton, a long-time Ellendale local who has lived in the town for nearly 70 years, emphasized the importance of the memorial as a place of reflection for veterans and the community. “It would be nice to have a better place for everybody to come to,” Dutton said. “There are a lot of veterans in and around Ellendale, and whatever we can do for them, that's what we need to do.”
Bella Terra Landscaping and Garden Center, tasked with the project, expressed their enthusiasm. “We want to make the site as beautiful as possible,” the company said, noting they didn’t hesitate to take on the work.
José Fernandez, another local, stressed the significance of maintaining the memorial. “It’s very important to keep the memory of those who have served alive in our town,” he said, underscoring the community’s commitment to honoring veterans.
The planned upgrades aim to provide a more fitting tribute to those who served.
