REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - A young grey seal rescued from Gordon’s Pond in North Shores is now getting the care he needs in Cape Cod.

Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute (MERR) first responded to the seal on April 10. After a brief stay at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey, the animal safely arrived at the National Marine Life Center in Massachusetts on Thursday evening.

Following MERR’s tradition of naming seals after constellations, this one was named Scutum—Latin for “shield.” The name was inspired by the seal’s unique habit of scooting backward during exams and treatments.

Scutum is now settling into rehabilitation as he works toward a hopeful return to the wild.
