The Georgetown Police Department is warning locals about a scam involving individuals posing as police officers

GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Georgetown Police Department is warning locals about a scam involving individuals posing as police officers in an attempt to solicit money or steal financial information.

According to the department, the impersonators are contacting individuals by phone and requesting banking information or payment, a practice the real police department says it would never do.

"We will never ask for your banking information or request payment for any reason," said the police department in a Facebook post.

Locals are urged to remain vigilant, avoid sharing personal information over the phone, and verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent law enforcement.
