MERR named the seal Andromeda. (MERR)

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- A young gray seal took a dangerous detour this week, crossing four lanes of traffic on Route 1 near the Indian River Inlet Bridge, before MERR stepped in to rescue her.

The two-and-a-half-month-old female seal somehow made it safely across the southbound lanes, crawling through what the Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute called a gauntlet. She ended up stuck in roadside vegetation, where MERR crews found and rescued her.

The pup, now named Andromeda, is recovering at the institute. Officials say she has some bite wounds but is receiving care.
