The economic impact of shopping local for your holiday gifts

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - With Christmas just six days away, many are searching to finalize their gifts to give out. Rather than resorting to big named stores and websites, shopping local is a great way to find that perfect gift. Shopping small helps communities, like downtown Rehoboth Beach.

"It's important to come in and shop small because you're supporting the local community and Rehoboth cannot stay alive without customers coming in and shopping with us," explained Carey Pauley, owner of Pink Turtle.

Many shops in the area told CoastTV this holiday season was one of the best for business. One business worker said gone are the days when the majority of the shops closed for the summer and people did not come to Rehoboth until May. The many events the city holds throughout the off season not only provide entertainment, but it also help bring more exposure to the local stores. Shopping small not only helps communities to grow, but it also gives customers the opportunity to find unique gifts.

"We strive for when we go to shows to look for things that you're not going to find somewhere else online or in bigger stores," said Bernadette Dawson, owner of Surf Shack.

Many employees, like Linda Didomenicis, say they find so much joy in taking the time to help customers find the perfect gift.

"I've been doing this for a long time, so to me its all about, customer service you know, it's just so personal, and you take time to pick out that gift that they're buying that person and it just makes a difference," said Didomenicis, who works at Sea Finds.
