MILLSBORO, Del.- Cleaning up Millsboro with a twist.
The Delaware Cannabis Advocacy Network and Non-Partisan Delaware are offering one free marijuana cigarette to everyone who registers for the 'Joints for Junk' event.Â
Every participant that is 21 and over will get a joint for their service in picking up trash around the community. The event is this coming Saturday.
Delaware Cannabis Advocacy Group executive director Zoe Patchell said the recent marijuana sale ban from town council and local neighbors' support for marijuana spurred the choice to host this event in Millsboro.
"Millsboro residents were really supportive of the legalization legislation and wanted stores in town and want this to be a part of their town," she said. "We were looking for the next location for our community service project and Millsboro just seemed to be the perfect fit."
Patchell added that the advocacy network hosts community events often, but this is the first time participants will be given marijuana as what she calls, a gift.Â
Due to popular demand, Patchell said there is another one of these events in the works, as this event is already almost at capacity.
Neighbors were seemingly mixed on having this event in town.
"First, you're cleaning up the community," said neighbor Michael Aamodt. "And if somebody wants to smoke a little pot on a weekend or when they're home, I don't see any problem with it."
But Charlene Truitt has conflicting feelings.
"I'm not against anybody smoking it. I'm not against them selling it. But you should have enough pride in your community, which you don't have to be bribed with a marijuana cigarette to pick up the trash."
According to Millsboro police, the use of marijuana in town is still allowed per Delaware state law. However, according to the town's police chief, he advised that people smoke their weed in their private residence.
