NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware President Dennis Assanis has announced plans to step down. Assanis has led the university since 2016 with a focus on academic excellence, student success and expanding research, scholarship and innovation.
He played a key role in making the University of Delaware more focused on global learning and connections. During his time as president, the university added more resources and created new opportunities to help students, faculty and staff succeed. Assanis also launched efforts to improve access to education, make it more affordable and support student success, including programs for career development and continuing education.

“UD is a remarkable place with a vibrant culture of interdisciplinary inspiration to reimagine what’s possible in higher education. I will forever treasure my experience of leading such an extraordinary institution defined by amazing students, talented faculty, dedicated staff and a vast network of loyal alumni and friends who support its mission,” Assanis said.
Board of Trustees Chair Terri Kelly thanked Assanis for his commitment and vision.
“President Assanis’ legacy of purpose-driven, positive change will forever have an impact on UD’s continued future of institutional excellence,” Kelly said.
An announcement about an interim president, who will begin serving July 1, is expected soon said the university.
