REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - A J1 visa student who was seriously hurt when she was hit by a car on Rehoboth Avenue has been released from the hospital, according to the Rehoboth Beach Police Department.
The crash happened July 9 as the student was riding her bike home after a work shift at Zelky’s arcade. A fundraiser created by Zelky’s owner, Matt Weiner, detailed the student’s injuries and recovery.
"Her road to recovery will be long and difficult, and as a student far from home, she now faces a wave of unexpected costs: medical bills, transportation expenses, loss of wages, legal fees, and more." said Weiner.
According to court documents, Megan Smith was more than twice the legal limit for blood alcohol content when she struck a J-1 visa student on Rehoboth Avenue. At the time of the crash, Smith also had multiple alcoholic beverages inside her car.
The 20-year-old told first responders she had been drinking earlier that night at the Purple Parrot and used a fake ID to get into the bar.
Adding to the confusion, the passenger in Smith’s car claimed he believed he was in an Uber. However, according to Uber’s own guidelines, drivers must be at least 21 years old, a requirement Smith would not meet.
A preliminary hearing is set for Friday, July 18, at 9 a.m. in Sussex County Court of Common Pleas.
