The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has amended boating regulations in the Back Bay areas of Ocean City, designating a portion of Fenwick Ditch as a minimum wake zone.

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Boaters preparing for another busy summer season in Ocean City will need to adjust their speeds, as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has implemented a minimum wake zone in a portion of Fenwick Ditch, effective March 17, 2025.

Local resident Tom Rice, who regularly takes his WaveRunner through the area, welcomes the change. “The slower is always better when you’re close to land, which is what that is. And I’m all about safety on the water,” Rice said.

Maryland implements minimum wake zone in Fenwick Ditch.

Previously, boats were allowed to travel at up to 6 knots in the designated area, but under the new rule, they must operate at the slowest speed necessary to maintain steering control. The Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources stated that the change is intended to reduce wake damage, enhance safety for life and property, and promote responsible boating practices.

Residents near Fenwick Ditch have voiced concerns about high-speed boaters in the area. With shallow waters below, excessive speeds could lead to serious injuries in the event of an accident. Rice has witnessed speeding boats firsthand and hopes the new rule will help increase safety. “It’s not going to hurt anybody by going a little slower back there. Maybe keep the WaveRunners out in the bay where they belong instead of inside.,” he said.

The regulation applies only to the Maryland portion of Fenwick Ditch.
